Evolution of a painting

See how the mood of this painting changes with each stage?  I was tempted to leave Grover hanging out in space on the white paper.  The image itself was intriguing enough, who needs a background?  But when I decided to wrap him in darkness- that made it seem he was emerging from a dark, quiet room.  Adding the red blanket just seemed a good complement to his fur.

To add drama to your work, consider your color palette.  Use rich hues and velvet darks, and don’t forget to save the white of your paper strategically.  Consider your composition.  Where do you want your viewer to look first?  Your focal point will be where the lightest light and the darkest dark meet.  Finally, is there a way to add emotion to your subject by the way you position it on the paper?  Remember, there are no boring subjects, just boring paintings.  Liven yours up with well thought out composition.
